Hello!

Here's the post to discuss as you read Black Water Sister. Unlike for Station Eternity, this will be the only discussion post for the book until our final discussion (July 13th)!

Also, the winner of our poll for next book after Black Water Sister was "The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera"!

As suggested in the comments of the last post, we can end up reading the rest of our runners up in the order they were voted in: Middlemarch by George Eliot, Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh, How Much of These Hills Is Gold by C Pam Zhang.

Here is the code for spoilers, please make sure to use it in the comments when discussing spoiler-y elements of Black Water Sister!

The results are in for our second and third books! (Kinda!)

Our next book will be Black Water Sister by Zen Cho! You will have until June 15th to acquire a copy of it. I'll put up a read along post for it then. Our final discussion for the book will be July 13th!

And here's why I'm posting the results of this a little earlier than I said I would. The results for book #3 were a bit more ambiguous. Four books tied for second:
  • Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh
  • Middlemarch by George Eliot
  • The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera
  • How Much of These Hills Is Gold by C Pam Zhang

The poll for the runner up will run until June 12th, and you can find that here! Given that this was so close, the tie breaker form only allows picking one. Campaigning for a favorite below is highly encouraged!!

Full results in picture form below for anyone interested:

From the responses on the last post, I think a shorter timeframe would work for pretty much everyone! (Me as well!) I wanted to leave that discussion open for a little, but I think a fair amount of time has passed now.

Since no one seemed too attached to discussion posts with set deadlines/timeframes, we can adopt what tullycat proposed (having one discussion post for live reactions, instead) for the next books. I'll still post a final post for discussion purposes as well!

I'm proposing the following schedule, and also that we pick our next two books at once, since there were a lot of good nominations last time, and most of the things we brought up this time were repeat nominations. Here's a little poll for that; I'll close this in a week. I've pulled the books that were suggested/repeated in our last discussion post for that.

If anyone would like to campaign for a choice, please comment below!

Proposed Schedule:
  • May 29 - June 5: Poll Open
  • June 8: Poll results go up (both book picks)
  • June 8 - June 15: A week to acquire Book #1
  • June 15 - July 13: Reading Book #1
  • July 13 - July 20: Discussing Book #1

  • July 20 - August 17: Reading Book #2
  • August 17 - August 24: Discussing Book #2

Hello all!

Thank you to greenet for the reminder that we don't have our next book picked or scheduled.

Here's the post for us to discuss our next books (if you have a book you'd like to read, suggest 1-3 in the comments and I'll make a poll for them next week) + talk about our experiences with Station Eternity (both the book itself if you have any more thoughts on that, and also how the schedule/check ins were) if you have any thoughts.

I was thinking we could pick out two or three books this time, given that we now have one book under our belt.

Twig volunteered at one point to run a book, so in that spirit let me know if you'd be interested in running a book (posting discussions, etc) at some point. I'm also perfectly happy to keep running them! Additionally, feel free as always to link this comm to anyone you'd like.

Looking forward to hearing from you all!

Here is the start of reading! As a reminder, the book we settled on was Station Eternity by Mur Lafferty.

If you're using check points, you have until March 10th for the first optional discussion (which will be for Chapters 1-9). If you're waiting until the end, our final discussion will be April 21st.

Let me know if you have any questions and happy reading! <3

Hello everyone! I've closed the poll (results in long form below the cut), and the final book that the most people were interested in that no one had read is Station Eternity by Mur Lafferty.

There were no objections to the timeline I proposed last post, so here's an outline of that. I've included a little extra time in there to acquire the book in the first place.

Febuary 18th: Start
March 10th: (optional) 1/3 check in (Chapters 1-9)
March 31st: (optional) 2/3 check in, submit questions to the group if you have them (Chapters 10-19)
April 21st: final discussion! (Book Finished)

A fair amount of books have been suggested over on this post for our first book, and so I'm capping suggestions to open voting.

Ideally I'd like to get a book a fair number of us are interested in that no one has read before. If you could fill out this form, that would be great! I'll close this in a week (2/2), and make a new post with the results when it's closed.

If you'd like to see the full list of titles (with summaries and genres), I've collated that here.

Additionally, it seems like we're about evenly split on bookclub format (guideposts along the way vs. one ending wrap up discussion), so I'm proposing an optional check ins 1/3 and 2/3 of the way through the book, and a larger discussion at the end of the book! That would take place over the course of 2 months. Please let me know if this would not work for you. I would also ask for questions to submit to the group at the 2/3 mark, as several people mentioned they'd have fun with them for a jumping off point.

Let me know if there's anything else on your mind!

I'm super excited to have everyone here! Since people might not know each other, I'm putting up this post for intros.

Name/ what types of books you like to read/ anything else you'd like to share? I think a lot of us run in similar circles (those being kpop rpf), but not always in an overlapping way. Do you have a favorite group?

If you haven't checked out the questions post yet, that's still open! It has some questions about what you'd like to read, and how you'd like the group to run in it.

I'll throw an intro comment under here as well!

Hello everyone! Several friends indicated an interest in a bookclub, so I put together this space to potentially host one. I'd like to aim for something slower and asynchronous, as I think it'd be nearly impossible to host any live discussions and coordinating schedules for anything quick would be messy.

1. Are there any books you're interested in reading? I'll compile suggestions and make another post about that.
2. What kind of timeline would work best for you? (Reading over the span of a couple months and coming back at the end of that? Checking in every couple weeks at a book milestone? Something else?)
3. How structured would you like discussions to be? (Ie: would having a couple guiding questions be helpful or annoying? I think individuals submitting questions for an end of book discussion could be fun!)
4. Anything else?

This community will remain open for anyone who'd like to join now or later!
